Over the past two years, WebRTC has been a hot topic of discussion, primarily because of its potential to really disrupt and shift the unified communications landscape. The idea of extending real-time communication capabilities to the masses via a Web browser has certainly generated a lot of interest and high expectations within the industry as a potentially game-changing technology. However, battles around industry standards, browser availability and software support have led to a general feeling of uneasiness among many key decision makers in the industry.
Adding to the confusion, media reports have varied widely on the topic of WebRTC, both in terms of its viability and widespread market adoption. Early in 2014, Nemertes Researchinterviewed approximately 200 IT leaders responsible for unified communications strategy, architecture and operations in end-user companies (not vendors or service providers.) As part of these interviews respondents were asked about their plans for WebRTC adoption. The results showed that fewer than 7 percent had definitive plans to deploy WebRTC over the next two years, while the vast majority had either no plans, or were still in the evaluation phase.
However, a recent report by Dialogic, titled “2014 WebRTC Impact Survey” suggests that people’s views and plans for WebRTC are rapidly changing.
In this survey, participants were service providers, application developers, etc., and they were asked about how WebRTC impacts their business models/processes.

WebRTC vs. Adobe Flash/Java
More than 66 percent of the respondents think that WebRTC is superior and more appealing than other alternatives, such as Adobe Flash or Java.
About two-thirds of the participants predict that WebRTC interactions will be used predominately for human-to-human interactions, not machine-to-machine or machine-to-human.
Survey respondents also think that the current WebRTC trend will have the most beneficial impact on verticals like education and healthcare.
WebRTC is expected to have a big impact on unified communications (UC) and help the UC market expand. With WebRTC, people can have instant and real-time communications in either video or voice calls, within browser-to-browser applications, which will change the way people connect and the way they use their UC systems in the future.
